Anita Saarkessian

Anita Sarkeesian, a Canadian/American media critic who is also a public speaker. She was the creator of Feminist Frequency which is a website with videos and comments analysing the way women are depicted in pop media. Anita Sarkeesian has been a journalist, media critic and award-winning feminist for more than a decade. She was the co-creator and director-executive of Feminist Frequency an educational non-profit website that explores representations of women within popular stories of culture. In her efforts to dispel the myths of women that have been portrayed in pop culture she also works to raise issues related to the targeted harassment of women and other marginalized classes of individuals in the internet space. Sarkeesian who has a Master's in Political and Social Thought from York University, is also well-known as a sought-after public speaker. She has delivered speeches at the TEDxWomen festival as well as United Nations Broadband Working Group to Gender. Passionate about issues of gender identity and feminism from at an early age, she created her site Feminist Frequency in 2009 while being a student at the University. Someone who was ambitious had a plan to make a web series which would explore how gender is represented within games. However, she found herself as the victim of an online harassment campaign. The harassment, however, did not dissuade her. She was only able to strengthen her position as a feminist journalist. Her significant contributions in the feminist field were recognized by a variety of prizes. Anita Sarkeesian is an award awarded media critic, and founder of Feminist Frequency an educational non-profit which studies the portrayals of women in popular culture and the narratives that surround them.
