Her role in Lisa McDowell, a romantic comedy film about moving to America (1988) and its sequel Coming 2 America (2021) is one of her most popular roles. Headley has been seen in the films The Preacher's Wife (1996) and Johnson Family Vacation (2004). On television, Headley starred as Detective Mimi Reed in the ABC soap opera of the day All My Children on a regular basis from 1991 until 1994. She played the lead role in the Fox drama series 413 Hope St. (1997-1998), for which she received a NAACP Image Award nomination for Outstanding Actress In the Drama Series. Headley played the role of Jennifer Sallison, a villain in the Oprah Winfrey Network primetime soap The Oprah Winfrey Network primetime soap opera The Haves and the Have Nots.
