
DeWitt began her stage career at age 13. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Ball State University. During her summer stock performance she was persuaded by the director to attend UCLA's Department of Theater MFA Program. She was granted the Master of Fine Arts Fellowship and the Clifton Webb Scholarship. Dewitt stated that she had never met actor Abe Vigoda while she was at UCLA. She worked as a secretary during her time at UCLA. The role she played by DeWitt as Janet Wood in Three's Company's 1977-1984 run is her most well-known. She was cast in the pilot episode of the show and later selected. She also appeared as Janet in a 1979 episode of the spinoff show The Ropers. DeWitt began her acting career in an episode in 1984 on Three's Company. The stage was her first time back to the stage in June of 1991 when she was a performer in a Noises Off production in Michigan's Cherry County Playhouse. In the following year, she appeared in the 1995 TV comedy film Spring Fling! Pinky and the Brain featured a character that was inspired by her voice, which was performed by a different actress in 1997. She appeared in an episode Cybill and also made an appearance on Living Single's final episode. Her work in the 2000s include TV shows like Hope Island, The Nick at Nite Holiday Special and Call of the Wild.
